Letter from the Head of School

Hello and welcome to Mountain Community School (MCS)! My name is Dr. Jenny Schon, and I am honored you are here. After working in education for several decades, I recognized an essential need that both our community and educational system was missing. In co-founding MCS, the goal was to create a school that was more reflective and responsive to both our changing world and each individual student’s needs. My background in field research helped me realize the value of both hands-on learning and an education program that was relevant to what is happening in the here and now - this is what place-based, project-based learning is all about. MCS is rooted in these philosophies while also recognizing that each student is unique and needs an educational program that meets their needs. We focus on empowering students to take ownership of their learning by giving them the tools they need to grow from where they are, to develop their own character and leadership style while also setting them up for success, for whatever their future path may bring. We look forward to working with you and your student(s) in celebrating their growth!

  • "My daughter feels accepted by her peers and teachers, despite her academic struggles. Her teacher is very understanding and compassionate when it comes to comfort levels and will not "single out" my daughter if the class is doing something above her academic level. This is much different than what we have experienced at other schools so it is extremely valuable to us."

  • "I’m learning a lot more at this school then my other schools. We get to go outside and learn things."

  • "This school has made a big difference in our day to day lives. I know that my daughter is getting plenty of time outside and she is supported. She loves going to school here whereas before she struggled with a typical school setting."

  • "We do a lot more engaging things. We don’t just learn in books."
